Prof. Dr. Martha C. Nussbaum

Martha C. Nussbaum ist Ernst Freund Distinguished Service Professor of Law and Ethics an der University of Chicago (USA). Sie gehört den Fakultäten für Recht und für Philosophie an. Zudem ist Nussbaum Assoziierte der Institute für Philologie, Theologie, Politikwissenschaft und Südasienkunde sowie Mitglied des Ausschusses des Programms für Menschenrechte.

Martha C. Nussbaum studierte an der New York University (BA) sowie an der Harvard University (MA, Doktorat) und unterrichtete an den Universitäten Harvard, Brown und Oxford. Während ihrer Zeit an der Brown Universität (1986-1993) war Nussbaum zudem Forschungsbeirätin am World Institute for Development Economics Research, Helsinki, das zur United Nations University gehört.

Nussbaum ist ehemalige Vorsitzende mehrerer Komitees der American Philosophical Association und hatte zwischen 1999 und 2000 das Präsidium von deren Central Division inne. Zudem ist sie Ehrendoktorin von 56 Universitäten und Hochschulen in den USA, Kanada, Lateinamerika, Asien, Afrika und Europa. Mehrere wissenschaftliche Akademien in Europa und in den USA haben Nussbaum als Mitglied gewählt, etwa die British Academy oder die American Academy of Arts and Sciences. Sie durfte zahlreiche Preise und Auszeichnungen entgegen nehmen, etwa den Kyoto Prize in Arts and Philosophy (2016).

I was delighted to be at the University of Zurich as a Hedi Fritz-Niggli visiting professor. I want to thank all my hosts very warmly for arranging this visit and for their kind hospitality, especially Prof. Dr. Brigitte Tag and Prof. Dr. Matthias Mahlmann.

In Zurich, I gave a public lecture with a lengthy discussion period in which both students and faculty posed very stimulating questions. On the following day I gave a three-hour seminar, during which we engaged in in-depth discussion of quite a few different topics related to my work. The dinner that followed gave graduate students, particularly from the Faculty of Law, a chance to talk with me about their projects, and I was impressed by the variety and high quality of the work that is being done.  On my final day I gave press interviews.

The whole visit gave me a very strong and positive impression of the intellectual richness of the university, its commitment to gender equality, and the outstanding quality of both faculty and students.
