Prof. Sheila Laverty

Sheila Laverty ist ordentliche Professorin an der Veterinärmedizinischen Fakultät der University of Montreal, Quebec in Kanada. Sie ist Spezialistin auf dem Gebiet der Pferdechirurgie und bildet Residents an der Pferdeklinik aus. Zudem ist Prof. Laverty Direktorin des Comparative Orthopedic Research Laboratory.

Sheila Laverty studierte Tiermedizin an der University College Dublin in Irland, und schloss mit Magna Cum laude ab (first class honours). Anschliessend arbeitete sie während 6 Jahren in verschiedenen privaten Praxen, die auf die Behandlung von Vollblutrennpferden spezialisiert sind (Irland, Australien, Neuseeland). Sie absolvierte ihre Residency in Pferdechirurgie an der University of California, Davis, USA, und gelangte 1989 an die University of Montreal. Sie ist Diplomate des American und des European College of Veterinary Surgeons.

Der Fokus der Forschung von Prof. Laverty ist seit 20 Jahren die Pathophysiologie, Diagnostik und Therapie von Gelenkserkrankungen. Sie hat mehr als 55 Residents, Masterstudierende, Doktorierende und Postdocs betreut und ihre Forschungsresultate in mehr als 100 Publikationen in führenden Fachzeitschriften veröffentlicht (z.B. Journal of Orthopaedic Research, Osteoarthritis and Cartilage, Arthritis and Rheumatism). Ausserdem wurde sie zu mehr als 80 Vorträgen als Referentin an internationalen Veranstaltungen eingeladen. Weiter wurde Prof. Laverty beim Canadian Arthritis Network (CAN) zur Leiterin des Bereichs Diagnostik und Therapeutik gewählt, und sie ist Mitglied der Forschungskommission dieses Netzwerks. Das CAN war ein Forschungsnetzwerk mit 150 multidisziplinären Forschenden, das von 1998 bis 2014 durch die kanadische Regierung finanziert wurde, um auf dem Gebiet der Osteoarthritis beim Menschen zu forschen. Zurzeit ist Sheila Laverty Mitglied des Forschungsrates der Arthritis Society of Canada sowie auch des Netzwerks für Stammzelltherapie der Regierung von Quebec. Prof. Laverty ist Rezensentin für internationale Forschungsförderungsagenturen, wissenschaftliche Fachzeitschriften und Beraterin für die Privatwirtschaft.

The invitation by the University of Zurich to be a Hedi Fritz-Niggli guest professor is one of the greatest honours of my academic career. This position allowed me to participate in the scholarly and research activities of the internationally renowned University equine teaching hospital and Musculoskeletal Research Unit of the Vetsuisse Faculty Zurich.

An added bonus was that, although my stay was short, I developed many rewarding friendships with people within the Veterinary Faculty and the Gender Equality Office that will persist beyond my visit. «Grüezi» and «genau» rapidly became part of my vocabulary and Laderach chocolate part of my diet! A «cerise sur le gateau» was the privilege of living in Zurich and discovering it’s rich culture and history. The extraordinary efficiency and ease of the public transport system providing rapid access to spectacular nature just enhanced the experience.

The challenges facing women in academia and modern families, with both partners working, are similar globally. Both the academic environment and society must change to encourage the full participation of both women and men in academia. It is commendable that the University of Zurich is aware of this and taking concrete steps to improve the situation.

I was extremely fortunate to work with such forward-thinking, dedicated, passionate and energetic women and men at the University of Zurich. The guest professorship will be a cherished memory and experience for the rest of my life.
